You Know You’re a Collector When……

I recently found out I am a Pharologist, and when I was a teenager I was a deltiologist, and my son is a numismatist……. What am I talking about? collecting things!

For many people collecting things is nore than just a hobby, its a pasion, even an obsession, and their collections take up alot of their time, money and often house room!

Collections can take on many forms, from the bizarre (navel fluff and air sickness bags!) to those of historic value such as lawnmowers and chocolate wrappers! But why do people start collecting? sometimes it is purely by accident, receiving or finding an item that arouses your interest, which is what happenend to me when brousing a gift shop in South Wales. It could be a conscious decision to start collecting, or a desire to collect something of value.

Collecting is not always an expensive hobby, it can even be free if you are collecting commonplace objects for example beer mats like my brother, picked up from pubs and clubs (look up Tegestology if you’re interested!) Sometimes it can be linked to a profession, doctors for example are often collectors  medical antiques, but sometimes there is no rational reason… just a passion!

If you are looking for tips on collecting then take a look at Barbara Crews’ online guide at she has some excellent tips including:

  • Collect with your heart, dont buy for investment unless you really know your stuff
  • The best collections are often linked to your memories
  • Be savvy, do your research so you can spot a bargain, but buy the best quallity you can afford, avoiding damaged items
  • Get a book!
  • Keep an inventory to avoid duplication and keep an eye on your expenditure
  • Care for, store, display and protect your collection to the best of your ability

So, what’s stopping you? get collecting!

Oh and by the way…. Pharologists are lighthouse enthusiasts, Deltiologists collect postcards and a Numismatist collects coins….. not sure if there is a name for someone who collects pig ornaments, apart from a Piggin’ nusience, but I’m one of those too……
