Joining a flashmob

On our recent cruise aboard the P & O ship Azura, I was delighted to find one of the activities we could take part in was an onboard ship’s choir, the Azura Singers. We met to practice a selection of songs from the musicals, including a selection from Fiddler on the Roof and Les Miserables. A concert was planned for the evening of the first sea day after leaving our final port of call, Gibraltar, and our MD Laura-Jane asked us if we would like to do a flash mob that morning to advertise the concert. A flash mob, for those of you unfamiliar with the concept,  is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and seemingly pointless act for a brief time, then disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment.

There have been many You tube videos of singing flashmobs, one of the most famous being the T Mobile flashmob at Liverpool St Station, and the Hallelujah chorus in a US shopping mall.

About three quarters of the 40 strong choir joined the flashmob in the main atrium of the Azura, joining shoppers who got more than a bargain as they were browsing the onboard shops! The crowd were certainly surprised and it resulted in a full house for the evening concert.

Hello, I was very pleased to see your pictures and info about our Choir on the Azura. My husband and I were also in the Choir at the same time as you and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We have been looking to see whether Laura Jane would put us on You Tube as she suggested she might, and have been disappointed not to find it. It was certainly good fun and we thought Laura Jane was excellent as our Choir Mistress! So thanks for your contribution.

Hi Linda thank you for your comments, it was a great holiday, and our Silver wedding while we were on board, and my husband is in the process of uploading our videos to youtube so I will let you know when they are there and send you the link 🙂
